Can an infected umbilical cord harm the baby?

the hospital i went to to have my baby told me dont do anything to the cord. its been a week now. it still hasnt fallen off, and its starting to stink and to puss a little. i think it may be infected. i have a dr appt for the baby tomorrow, but im worried it could affect the baby. can and infection of the umbilical cord harm my baby??? and is there anything i can do to help it til tomorrow. i feel so bad if its hurting her ]:
