What is the proper definition of 'hidden files' in copmuter lingo?

Hidden files arent actually hidden. They are folders and files that dont appear normally because they have no use to the user. They are files used in the background by programs or the OS. Usually they are hidden because they arent meant to be fiddled with because one tiny change could be catastrophic.
